FAQ
Common questions and fixes, grouped by symptom.
Classifying pages
Section titled “Classifying pages”The byline just says “Classification” with no coloured dot — I cannot classify.
Section titled “The byline just says “Classification” with no coloured dot — I cannot classify.”One of these is true:
- Classification is not enabled in the space. A space admin needs to enable it in Space Settings. Non-admins see “Classification is not enabled. Contact your space admin.”
- The space is blocked by a Confluence admin via Space Access Control. Nobody can classify there.
I see the level but it is read-only — I cannot change it.
Section titled “I see the level but it is read-only — I cannot change it.”You have view access to the page but not edit access. Classification changes restrictions, so only editors (and Confluence admins) can change a page’s level. Ask an editor or admin.
I picked a level but nothing changed.
Section titled “I picked a level but nothing changed.”Did you refresh after the green “Classification saved ✓” confirmation? The byline dot, banner, and label update on page reload.
Should I refresh while it is still saving?
Section titled “Should I refresh while it is still saving?”No. Wait for the green “Classification saved ✓ — refresh the page now” message first. Refreshing mid-save can desync the restriction tracking and cause the next level change to remove the wrong groups (restrictions appear to accumulate). Always wait for the confirmation.
Banners
Section titled “Banners”I classified a page but there is no banner.
Section titled “I classified a page but there is no banner.”- The level’s page header style may be None (byline dot only) — by design.
- The level may be set to Image but have no image uploaded — it falls back to no banner. Ask your space admin to add an image or switch to Colour.
- Try a refresh — the banner appears on reload.
See Page Banner.
The banner is too big or too small.
Section titled “The banner is too big or too small.”Banner height is a space-wide setting (small, medium, or large). A space admin changes it in Space Settings → Header image size.
Restrictions and access
Section titled “Restrictions and access”Does Classify replace Confluence permissions?
Section titled “Does Classify replace Confluence permissions?”No. Classification helps users understand how content should be handled, and it also applies real Confluence view and edit restrictions based on each level’s groups. You should still review Confluence permissions when strict access control is required.
After classifying, some people can no longer see the page.
Section titled “After classifying, some people can no longer see the page.”That is expected — classification applies the level’s view restrictions. Only the groups attached to that level can see the page. If the wrong people are locked out, the level’s view and edit groups need adjusting in Space Settings. Re-classify after fixing the level.
View restrictions seem to be piling up after each change.
Section titled “View restrictions seem to be piling up after each change.”This is the symptom of refreshing mid-save (see above). Going forward, always wait for the saved confirmation. If a page is already in a bad state, re-apply the correct level once (waiting for confirmation) to reset it cleanly.
A Confluence admin can classify a restricted page I cannot.
Section titled “A Confluence admin can classify a restricted page I cannot.”Correct — admins bypass page edit-restrictions, matching normal Confluence behaviour.
Templates and spaces (admins)
Section titled “Templates and spaces (admins)”Can admins define custom classification levels?
Section titled “Can admins define custom classification levels?”Yes. Confluence admins define classification levels inside global templates, and space admins can build or adjust levels per space — including name, colour, description, label, page header style, and the view/edit groups. See Global Templates and Space Settings.
Can different spaces use different classification levels?
Section titled “Can different spaces use different classification levels?”Yes. Each space has its own configuration. Levels are usually copied from a global template, but a space can edit them locally afterwards, and different spaces can use entirely different level sets.
I applied a template to spaces but some were skipped.
Section titled “I applied a template to spaces but some were skipped.”Those spaces are blocked by Space Access Control and are skipped on purpose. The result message lists them. See Space Access Control.
I edited a template but existing spaces did not change.
Section titled “I edited a template but existing spaces did not change.”Global templates are copied into a space when applied, so spaces stay independent. To push changes, re-apply the template to those spaces (confirm the override prompt).
A space already has levels — can I apply a template anyway?
Section titled “A space already has levels — can I apply a template anyway?”Yes, but you get a conflict prompt. Confirming overrides the space’s current configuration.
How do I stop a space from using classification entirely?
Section titled “How do I stop a space from using classification entirely?”Use Space Access Control: switch to Blocked spaces and add it, or Allowed spaces only and leave it off the list.
Still stuck?
Section titled “Still stuck?”- Re-read the guide for the specific area: Classifying a Page, Page Banner, Space Settings, Global Templates, Space Access Control, Classification Report.
- Contact your space administrator (for space-level issues) or Confluence administrator (for templates and access control).
